October 30, 2022: On Friday 8-year-old boy Sam Baker became the youngest person to climb El Capitan in California’s Yosemite National Park. According to news reports Sam’s father, Joe Baker, was by his son’s side as they scaled El Capitan in California this week.
Joe Baker posted on social media “What an amazing week! I’m so proud of Sam,” Joe Baker wrote in the post. “He completed the youngest rope ascent of ElCap!” “In a few years he might be be back breaking more records.”
The father and son duo began their ascent of the 3,000-foot climb on Monday as part of a four-person team, where one person climbs ahead of the crew and sets the ropes for others to follow CNN reported.
Before this week’s climb, the father and son climbed a third of El Capitan, located on the west side of Yosemite Valley inside the national park in Central California.
Previously, Sam climbed Pingora Peak in the Cirque of the Towers, Wyoming and the Nose of Mount Albert near Independence Pass, Colorado at the age of 5.
