January 24, 2023: On Jan. 19, Basque climbers Amaia Agirre, 31, and Iker Bilbao, 29, were caught and buried in an avalanche that carried them into a crevasse. According to Desnivel, CAX of El Chalten terminates the rescue in conclusion, the climbers are not missing, they have been buried in a crevasse for 48 hours and we believe that the search for their bodies exposes our volunteer rescuers to very high risks.
The third member of their team, Josu Linaza, was unharmed and called for help. A third climber in the group was not caught in the avalanche.
The crack in which these climbers have buried measures 100 meters long by 8 meters wide (approx) and 15 meters deep to the snow plug, ignoring its real bottom.
