November 17, Solukhumbu: It has been found that unauthorized tents have been constructed at the base camp and high camp of Mera peak. It has been found that tents have been constructed using wood and zinc sheets for commercial purposes at the base camp and high camp of Mera Peak located at Mahakulung of Solukhumbu.
According to the trekking guide, the businessmen who have been operating hotel businesses in the upper region have been constructing and using tents on their own despite the legal provision that they are not allowed to do any activities other than climbing in the mountain.
Refugee Mera Hotel has built a tent at High Camp (5500 m). Other hoteliers have also set up tents at the base camp. Entrepreneurs have been saying that they have set up tents at the base camp and high camp after the hassle of fetching kitchen utensils and other necessities.
Former director of the tourism department Mira Acharya said that they are not allowed to do any activity except mountaineering.” It is against the law to set up any kind of permanent structure at the base camp and above,” she said
Trekking guides who have visited the area several times with tourists have expressed concern that if the tent construction is not controlled, the beauty of the mountains will deteriorate and mountain tourism will be affected.
