December 22, 2022: Matthew Eakin died in K2 in July during the descent from the summit of K2.His body still remains buried underneath snow and ice. A small group of his friend’s climbers is now preparing to retrieve his body.
Matthew’s sister Danielle Bonnington said to ABC News, “A very generous group of Matt’s close friends has offered to go to Pakistan to attempt to retrieve him, so that he may be buried with respect and dignity,”.”Matt’s location has been marked by GPS so the chances that he can be found are high,” she added.
According to sources, a small avalanche struck during the descent from the summit not so far from the base camp area but the deceased person’s exact location is still unknown.
A team of climbers is planning to head to Pakistan in February 2023.
