November 09, 2022: Dead bodies of climbers have started to appear in the world’s highest peak Everest due to melting snow. The climbers have said that the bodies of those who lost their lives while climbing has started to be seen outside due to the continuous melting of snow in the mountains due to climate change.
300 mountaineers have died on the peak since the first ascent attempt and two-thirds of bodies are thought still to be buried in the snow and ice. Sanu Sherpa, a record climber, said that bodies buried in ice and snow have started to appear on the surface as the snow melts.
He says that seeing the corpses of others in the mountains, where disaster can strike at any time, creates fear in the heart. He has been climbing the mountain for almost two decades and said that in recent years, bodies have started to be seen as the snow melts. Another climber Nar Bahadur Asthani Magar also said that he saw many dead bodies while climbing Mount Everest.
Many bodies have been removed from the Chinese side, but the bodies are still in the snow on the Nepalese side. Climbers say that even in places where no corpses were seen the previous year, corpses are seen next year after the snow melts. It is said that such bodies can be seen from the Khumbu Icefall up to the balcony. There are many dead bodies in and around camp 4.
When the Khumbu glacier was active, dead bodies were also seen there. Climber and expedition worker PK Sherpa, who conducted the Mt Everest cleanup campaign and brought some bodies to the base camp, said that many bodies were stopped there because it was expensive to bring bodies.
Some dead bodies have been rescued under the government’s mountain clean-up campaign conducted by the Nepali Army.
