A mountain climber who found The treasure eight years ago has finally been awarded his share of the jewels.
Global News reported that he was hiking des Bossons glacier on Mont Blanc in the French Alps and spotted something shiny peeking out from the ice and snow. He pried a metal box out and found a bag inside containing about 100 precious stones- rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, which have been valued at approximately US$340,000 which had been buried for 55 years.
Authorities believe the precious stones are likely to have come from the 1966 flight, which had been en route from Mumbai to New York. The Boeing 707, flying from Mumbai, crashed on the southwest face of Mont Blanc on 24 January 1966.
According to the local news ”, He saw very well that what he had in his hands was something very valuable, realizing straight away that it was precious stones that had been very carefully wrapped,”
The treasure will now be split between the climber and the owner of the land, which in this case is the local authorities.
Two Air India planes crashed into Mont Blanc in 1950 and in 1966
Over the years, climbers have routinely found debris, baggage and human remains from the two aircraft.
