March 18, 2024: In a significant move for Nepal’s tourism sector, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has officially declared Pokhara as the country’s Tourism Capital. The announcement came during a ceremony held on Sunday, highlighting Pokhara’s unparalleled blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and adventurous offerings.

Recognized as one of Nepal’s premier tourist destinations, Pokhara’s elevation to the status of Tourism Capital marks a pivotal moment in the country’s tourism narrative. Dhanraj Acharya, the head of Pokhara Metropolitan City, emphasized the city’s global appeal, referring to it as the “world’s top tourist destination.”

The decision to designate Pokhara as the Tourism Capital stemmed from a thorough examination conducted by a team of experts, assessing various criteria to determine its suitability for the prestigious title. This move is expected to catalyze growth not only in the Gandaki region but also on a national scale.

Acharya expressed optimism regarding the implications of this declaration, anticipating a surge in tourism-related initiatives and infrastructural development within the Gandaki province. He underscored the international precedent of designating cities as capitals based on their distinctive characteristics and identities.

Looking ahead, stakeholders hope that the Gandaki provincial government will leverage this designation to implement tailored tourism strategies at the local level, further enhancing Pokhara’s allure and contributing to the broader tourism landscape of Nepal.
