April 23, 2023: A tragic incident has occurred on Mt Dhaulagiri, as a porter named Amrit Rai from Solududhkunda of Solukhumbu has gone missing. The incident happened after heavy snowfall triggered an avalanche near the base camp, according to Thaneswar Guragai, General Manager at Seven Summit Treks, the expedition organizer. Rai, along with two friends, was returning from the base camp when the incident took place near a Japanese camp. While Rai’s two friends – Arjun Rai and Dhiraj Rai – were rescued safely on Saturday, Amrit Rai’s status is still unknown.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with mountain climbing and trekking, especially during the winter season when the weather can be unpredictable. The expedition organizer has stated that the incident occurred after they had deposited expedition logistics at the base camp, which is a crucial part of any climbing expedition. It is important to ensure that all necessary equipment, supplies, and other logistical support are available to climbers, and porters play a vital role in this process.
