March 14, 2024: Changes have been made to rules regarding the transportation of materials for mountain climbing above Syangboche by Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality. This decision, forming part of the initial amendment to the Base Camp Management Procedure of 2024, has been initiated by the local government.
Previously, the rural municipality had enforced a regulation prohibiting the transportation of climbing materials in the area above Syangboche via helicopters. Instead, local labor, yaks, and jokes (a hybrid between a cow and a yak) were mandated to bolster the local economy through mountain climbing activities.
However, the recent amendment has adjusted the regulations to permit the transportation of climbing materials above Syangboche by helicopters or alternative means, subject to obtaining permission from the coordination and monitoring committee when necessary.
Furthermore, the previous regulations regarding the management of climbing activities included clauses regarding removing human waste from the mountains. These regulations are now set to be implemented starting from the current season.
